Microalgae offer a nutrient-dense and land-efficient protein source, yet their large-scale production is limited by media cost, reliance on sugar crops, and modest biomass yields. Our work demonstrates how food side-streams such as soy whey and brewer’s spent grains can be hydrolysed and blended to create a nutrient-rich cultivation medium that fully replaces conventional exogenous nutrients, while achieving biomass performance comparable to standard media.
In this talk, I will discuss our upcycling strategy, its implications for cost-effective microbial protein production, and the remaining challenges, as we explore the future role of microalgae in sustainable urban food systems.
嘉宾简介:
Shaoquan Liu,新加坡国立大学理学院食品科学与技术系终身副教授,新加坡国立大学苏州研究院大健康生物与食品工程卓越研究中心高级研究员。Prof. Liu博士毕业于新西兰梅西大学,在新西兰乳制品行业工作了10多年后,于2008年加入新加坡国立大学。Prof. Liu的研究领域包括酒精和非酒精饮料的发酵、食物废料的生物增值、益生菌发酵食品和饮料以及微藻的生物质培养。Prof. Liu已发表论文300余篇(引用9000余次,H指数48),并获授权了15项专利 (6项衍生专利,3家创业公司的联合创始人),其中包括世界上第一个益生菌啤酒。
